TBIG Reshapes Leadership to Strengthen National and Regional Alignment

The Building Intelligence Group (TBIG) has announced a refreshed executive and management team to better connect its national strategy with regional delivery across Aotearoa.

Brent Thomson has been appointed Director of Engagement & Partnerships, focusing on client service, partnerships, and internal capability. Byron Roff becomes Director of Operations, leading national project delivery and performance. Hayden Whelan (Ngāi Tūhoe) joins as National Partnerships Manager, bringing cultural insight and a strong commercial background to strategic client relationships.

Alongside the executive changes, TBIG has promoted four new Business Managers: Charles Brown (Greater Auckland), Bevan Botha (Central), Stuart Lyons (Eastern), and Jeremy Wilson (Greater Wellington), with Ian Currie continuing to lead the South Island.

The restructure follows the recent appointment of Honorary Dame Suzanne Snively as Independent Board Chair, signalling TBIG’s strengthened focus on governance and national capability.

Warren and Mahoney is delighted to welcome Tobin Smith as Principal based in their Christchurch Studio

Tobin has spent his career designing fine-grain projects, specialising in residential architecture, multi-housing design, and high-end homes. He joins WAM at an exciting time, with increasing ambition to create innovative and sustainable homes that are inspired by and responsive to their unique context.  
 
“Being trusted to design a home is both a great privilege and responsibility – one that Warren and Mahoney has embraced for over 65 years,” says WAM Christchurch Head of Design Jonathan Coote. “Tobin’s approach to design, which genuinely reflects the needs and desires of the inhabitants, perfectly aligns with our design ethos. We’re delighted to welcome him into the fold to continue delivering authentic, enduring homes for our clients.” 

Greenwood Roche are very excited to announce the addition of Kate Watt as a Principal

Kate began her career at Bell Gully, then was at ‘magic circle’ firm Freshfields in London for six years, before returning to Bell Gully. After a few years as the Associate General Counsel at Heartland Bank, Kate left to build ‘New-Law’ firm Shift Advisory.  

 Since 2021, Kate has been consulting independently – providing legal and commercial advice and project management to established corporates and growth businesses.   

Kate has broad experience across corporate, commercial, banking, finance and regulation, with particular experience in the finance and energy sectors. Her renewable energy project work has included close involvement in landowner negotiations, PPA negotiations and project financial close.

Supporting the team nationwide, Kate will be based in the Auckland office. Congratulations Kate! 

Wingates appoints new Principals - Rachel Venables and David Joyce
Wingates welcomes Rachel Venables as Principal Architect

Wingates is delighted to welcome Rachel Venables to the team as 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐫𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭. With nearly three decades of experience in design and master planning, Rachel brings a wealth of expertise to the practice. 

She has held leadership roles in top architectural firms, guiding teams to deliver well-considered, commercially successful developments. Known for her exceptional eye for detail, Rachel is passionate about designing spaces that are highly functional and enrich lives—aligning perfectly with Wingates’ mission of 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫. 

Her career spans leading practices and her own firm, giving her a strong commercial and management background. She has received industry recognition for her work, including awards for residential and furniture design. Notably, Rachel led the development of standard house types for Kāinga Ora, enabling the scaling up of social housing across the country. She has also collaborated with community housing providers in both design and review capacities. 

At Wingates, Rachel will focus on all design stages of medium to high-density residential developments, strengthening their ability to deliver outstanding architectural solutions across Aotearoa New Zealand. 

“My wide range of design and on-site experience has given me a broad and deep knowledge of the industry, providing a solid foundation for delivering resolved and sustainable design. I look forward to helping Wingates further develop its highly respected body of work.”

Wingates welcomes David Joyce to the Team

We’re excited to welcome David Joyce to Wingates as Principal | Design & Operations Manager, bringing with him more than 35 years of experience in the building industry and a deep, practical understanding of a wide range of construction processes and building types.

David began his career as an architectural graduate, working across educational and private housing projects. Over the decades, he has expanded his expertise to include luxury homes, industrial buildings, commercial fitout, high-end apartments and specialised facilities—building a well-rounded perspective that informs his work today. 

At Wingates, David will provide strong leadership across all sectors of Commercial and Large Format Architecture, drawing on his experience working alongside some of New Zealand’s leading project management and development organisations. Known for his calm leadership and clear communication, he’s well equipped to guide teams and projects through complex design environments. 

I’ve always believed that architecture is a powerful tool for enhancing people’s everyday lives,” says David Joyce.

“It’s not just about the final product—it’s about the collaborative process. Great design happens when clients, users, designers, and builders bring their ideas together to produce environments in new and meaningful ways. I am excited to be joining an organisation that lives and breathes this approach.”
